NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE CORPORATION

You are registered with the National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC).
This is a public health service where you will get the same coverage as Korean nationals registered with this service.

The NHIC covers a number of essential medical services offered at public health care facilities in Korea. Depending on what health care service you use/ visit, NHIC will cover a certain percentage of the required payment.

For more information on what is and is not covered, please visit their website or call them on 1577-1000 (press '7' for English).

HEALTH INSURANCE DEDUCTIONS

Your health insurance premium is a certain percentage of your total monthly salary. Each month, the GICCE will pay 50% of the premium and the GET will pay the other 50%. This will automatically come out of your salary and you can check your pay stub for the amount. Please refer to Article 13 (Clause 2) of the contract for more information.

Health insurance adjustments happen every April and September. There is a back deduction for health insurance and could result in a noticeable deduction if your income level rises from one year to the next. This means that your health care premium adjusts for the amount that you should have been paying NHIC according to your actual income for that tax year, and you need to pay back any outstanding amount. If you are leaving job, adjustments to health care will be made in your final pay.

The last calculation could take sometime to finalize your health insurance fee because of the tax adjustment after the contract finishes.
Please check with your local office in advance and make sure to organize payment methods.

CLAIMING COVERAGE

You can only be registered with the NHIC once their ARC number has been issued. When you receive your ARC number, you will need to inform the co-teacher know so that you can be registered. As of August 2019, NHIC no longer sends health booklets to the school/office of Education. You are required to visit their nearest NHIC Center to pick their health booklet up.
Alternatively, call the NHIC hotline to arrange delivery 577-1000 (press '7' for English)

This booklet on the left, acts as an official document that proves you have health insurance. However, in most cases, you can simply show your ARC at a hospital or doctor's office in order to claim health insurance benefits.

If for some reason you go the hospital before you have your ARC or health booklet while you are in Korea, you are still technically covered although not officially registered. You will need to keep your receipts from the treatment. Once you have your health care booklet, you can go back to the relevant hospital within 14 days of treatment and they can process a reimbursement.

DEPENDENTS

If you have a spouse and/or children who reside with you in Korea, they can be registered under the service at no extra cost. If this is the case, please send the GET Program Manager

  • A scan of the front and back of their ARC
  • A certified copy of your marriage certificate (where applicable)
  • A certified copy of your child's birth certificate (where applicable)

However, If you have any questions, Please reach out your school or office of education first.
If they do not have clear answer, then please call the hotline 1577-1000
